Our Story
Run of the Mill String Band, Palmer and Greg Loux, Paul Sidlick and Mat Clark, have been playing and performing Old Time Appalachian music together since 1980. They have entertained at many concerts and festivals in the mid-Atlantic area including the Kennedy Center, Philadelphia Folk Festival, Brandywine Mountain Music Convention, Bethlehem Musikfest, Hudson River Clearwater Revival, Delaware Valley Bluegrass Festival, Wilmington’s American Roots Festival and Doylestown’s Mercer Museum Folk Festival. Run of the Mill were the featured entertainers at the Brandywine Friends of Old Time Music Fall 2004 Picnic. They are also one the most sought-after square dance bands in the area, having played the Glenside, Cochranville, Russellville, Arden, West Chester, Philadelphia’s Tuesday Night and Bethlehem Valley Contra dances numerous times. Run of the Mill have won many ribbons and awards, including the 1993 Senior Old Time Band Championship at Fiddler's Grove festival in Union Grove, North Carolina. During the summer of 1992 the band toured Russia, Czechoslovakia, and Austria as part of a concert tour presenting American traditional music styles.
The band's repertoire includes hot fiddle tunes, southern rags, regional waltzes, and old country songs from the early days of recording. Numerous instruments are played by the members including fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, banjo-mandolin, banjo-guitar and upright bass. Their 1998 recording, In Good Company, on Ray Alden’s Chubby Dragon label, was listed as one of the “Best of 1998” recordings of new old-time music by County Sales of Floyd, Virginia. In 2005, the band released a critically acclaimed recording, Steal Aboard, on the Stylograph label. The band was the subject of a feature article in the February 2006 issue of the Old Time Herald.
